Postcard "The Monk" by Camille Corot
This high-quality postcard shows the painting ‘The Monk’ by Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot (1796-1875). The original work was created in 1874 and is an oil painting on canvas measuring 72.5 x 51 cm. It is in the collection of the Hamburger Kunsthalle, where it was acquired in 1921 as a bequest from Erdwin and Antonie Amsinck. The reproduction was taken by the photographer Elke Walford and reproduced in great detail.
Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot was an important French painter of the 19th century who is considered a pioneer of Impressionism. His works are characterised by a harmonious use of light and a subtle depiction of nature. ‘The Monk’ is an impressive example of his late creative period and combines his masterful technique with a deep atmospheric effect.
